Many years ago, I met Michi who was then president of Squamish CAN and behind many of their signature accomplishments. I was quickly inspired by the work she and Squamish CAN did so I joined as a volunteer, hoping to become a more active part of the solutions to our modern times' problems. She recommended I read Seeds of Resistance, by Mark Schapiro. Since then, I have immersed myself in inspiring, yet frustrating and outraging, books and documentaries. The Seeds of Vandana Shiva and Modified, by Aube Giroux, are some examples of films that impacted me greatly.
Now a Program Coordinator for Squamish CAN, I start the year by organizing gardening and food presentations/workshops that take place in the Spring and Fall. This includes our annual Seedy Saturday event in late Winter. I also manage all things related to the Squamish Seed Library throughout the year. As of 2025, I will help our Zero Waste Coordinator with supporting residents and businesses in reducing and diverting their waste.
I am proud to be part of a friendly and cooperative team that can set and achieve goals for the greater good. I came on board in 2019 with some landscaping experience and a permaculture design certificate but mostly a desire to help, to contribute to building a cleaner and safer future for all.
Outside of work, I am the most happy in our local trails, on foot or wheels. I do find myself picking up litter almost every time I head out in the forest, it's a constant reminder that we need to do more. More policy changes, more public education and empowerment, more thoughtful decisions in all aspects of our every day lives, whenever possible. I found that bringing my mug wherever I go quickly became a second nature. It takes some time to create a new habit and much longer to undo a bad one but everyone can do it. Single-use cups should be the next grocery store plastic bags! Try it and you will never look back!
